F3 – Cycle 97 – Crossroads

Gray and Gold, by John Rogers Cox

This week’s prompt is my favorite painting, that you can see at the top. It lives at the Cleveland Museum of Art, tucked off to the side of the modern art section, near the coat racks. Every time I go there, I seek it out and ponder it longer than anything else there. It’s captivating to me and suggests so many possibilities.

I’d like you to use it as an inspiration for a story and I’d like your story to feature this particular crossroads as a setting. Are you meeting someone? The devil, perhaps? Have you been walking aimlessly down a country lane and found yourself here, not sure which way to go?

Take a few moments. Absorb the scene and then decide to go down the write path.

Prompt: Use the painting Gray and Gold as an inspiration and a setting for your story
Word Limit:  1,300 words
Deadline: Wednesday,  September 26th at 9:00 p.m. EST
Instructions: Please post the name of your story and a link to it in the comments.

  1. Well, I was going for a nice little dark noir tale, but something happened at the crossroads today.

I will try to get my links posted before 6PM – I am on West Coast – Wednesday. I hope, if I am a little late, you will still put my story up.

  2. The Querulous Squirrel

I left comments twice and they don’t seem to be coming through.

    • I’m sorry…I can’t get to your blog. It’s by invitation only. Would you consider opening it up? If not you can email me your story title and text and I will post it here for you.

  3. Wonderful prompt, Flannery! I didn’t get over here until just yesterday, but that painting totally captivated me.

Here is my offering for this week. I might have strayed just a tiny, wee bit from the prompt, but I think I’ll be forgiven as I’ve brought it in right at 1,300 words. As I mentioned earlier, my original story was going to be a nice dark, noir piece… but, something happened at the crossroads. I hope you enjoy this one.
