It was Tom Waits’ birthday last week. Love him, hate him, offer him a throat lozenge, he’s one of our great songwriters. And he said this about songs:
My theory is that songs have to be anatomically correct. They need to have weather in them and the name of a town and usually something to eat — in case you get hungry.
You have 1000 words. That’s a lot of songs. Make your story anatomically correct- take that as you will! Weather, the name of a town, and something to eat. And a song, while you’re at it. If you’re a fan of Tom Waits, pick a song title for your story if you like. Insert Mr. Waits as the wise and smelly hobo character, if you are so inclined. But have fun with it, and have it in by Wednesday the 21st.
And this is the last cycle before the end of the holiday season, so feel free to add that in as well. After all, he did write “Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis!”
