F3 Cycle 47: The City of Lost Children

Our guest writer this week is frequent contributor Fiona Johnson, who has been published in Shotgun Honey and the Flash Fiction Offensive. Her home on the web is http://mcdroll.blogspot.com/
Take it away, Fiona!

I write short stories that try to get to the emotional heart of why people act the way they do in situations of stress when the pressure is really on. I try to break down stereotypes and particularly enjoy writing about strong women who are not afraid to hit back at society. My stories are often described as bleak and heartbreaking and if that’s what people think, then I’m pleased because it means I have caused a reaction.

Look at the photo, look into the child’s eyes. Some children are lost before they have even started living. Some children are a throw-away commodity like a burger box that’s left to blow down the street in the wind and rain.

By Danielle Tunstall

I want clever stories that don’t rely on tales of abuse or overt violence but that give an insight into the world of our lost children. I like to be kept guessing and I like endings that don’t spell everything out. Be descriptive and write realistic dialogue from your home town.

Make this piece of writing the best you’ve ever created; do this for the lost children.

Thanks Fiona, that’s a powerful photograph and a subject we should never forget. It is one close to my own heart. 700 words may sound small, but check out Shotgun Honey for full-fledged stories in 700 or less… it’s tough but you can do a lot with it. The heartrending photo is by Danielle Tunstall

As an added bonus, Fiona will donate £5 per story for CHILDREN 1st, the Scottish Society for prevention of cruelty to children and I will donate $5 for each story to PROTECT the National Association to Protect Children. Addendum from Tom: I may split my donations with Living Water for Girls, who help get young sexually exploited women off the streets. I’ve donated to them before and it is a worthy and underfunded cause.

Genre – open
Length – 700 words
Topic – look at the photo, look into the child’s eyes.
Deadline – Wednesday September 7th at Midnight EST. The stories post will go up Thursday morning.

    Great – thanks Tommy!

700 words?  Wow… now, here is a challenge!  Not counting the little 100 word slices I do for Lily Childs Feardom, I have written only two stories that were less than a thousand word.  My brain is going to get some exercise this week!

  • SueH

Sorry folks – will probably gave to give F3 a break for a while – my daughter’s just had emergency surgery and I’ll be nursing her virtually 24/7 :-/

I wish you all the best and will try to look in, as & when… :-)

    • I Hardy

Sue – a quick recovery to your daughter! I hope everything goes ok…

      • SueH

Thanks Chad, & everyone else – no matter how old they are, they’re still your kids! Will be thinking of you all and will try to catch up on the stories as and when I can ;-)

Sue – Oh, I am so sorry to hear of your daughter.  Of course, family comes first!  Will miss you and my prayers are with you and your family.

Thanks James – another £5! I’m so excited about everybody’s response – wonderful!

  • I Hardy

Here is my effort, hope I didn’t go overboard… I’d love to hear opinions on it, even if you didn’t like it. Perhaps it’s too overdone.

http://www.rabidfiction.com  “The Fall of Buffalo Bill”

By the way, may I ask a question? I’ve put the first draft of my first book aside for awhile some time ago, and am nearly done with my second attempt. I’ve been reading that it is a good idea to have something called Beta readers before putting a book out? How might one find such people? My apologies if it is a silly question.

    • http://www.pluckyoutoo.com Thomas Pluck

I suggest approaching people whose writing you admire, or friends who tell you like it is. Some can be hard to find. Also, professional editors can be found online, I know one at alisonedits.com (not an endorsement). I’d also suggest reading Chuck Wendig’s terribleminds.com blog and using his writing advice to self-edit, he tells it like it is. Fictionaut.com is a good writing community, so is chuckpalahniuk.net (soon to be litreactor.com) if you need to find fellow writers serious about improvement.

      • I Hardy

Thank you so much for those links, Thomas. I will go look at each one…

I will post a link to my story shortly… I am still searching for a photo to go with it.

I’m not sure if my story is exactly what you are looking for, but it is what came out of my pen, and that is what I am going with.  I am reminded of a quote by Susan Isaacs…

“Keep in mind that the person to write for is you.  Tell the story that you most desperately want to read.”

  • http://veronicathepajamathief.wordpress.com/ Veronica Marie Lewis-Shaw

700 words…. I don’t know if it is Fiona’s prompt (it did reach out and grab my heart, dear!), the new pen or the three week break I took, but this story just poured out.  Here is the link to my story -

    • Fiona Johnson

Veronica – just wanted to do something worthwhile for my 50th birthday, thanks for taking part.

  • Helen Vipond

I would like to contribute a short story, as below:

She was small for her age, and found learning difficult. She remembered her first day at school, when she arrived, feeling lost and alone. She didn’t speak English very well and …was extremely shy. She wiped away a tear that threatened to fall from the corner of her eye. She pretended she was on a new adventure, a magical mystery tour to help her to cope. As her mum turned and left she felt lost. She noticed a girl at the back of the classroom, who was crying, a blond-haired girl with a long pony tail. Somehow it made her feel better to know that someone felt like her, and it gave her comfort, being able to comfort her new found friend. Most of her classmates treated her as an alien, because of her dark skin colouring and because she couldn’t speak English very well, she got bullied and withdrew into herself. She didn’t learn to read until she was seven, when finally she was able to read the words it gave her a huge sense of relief, that finally she could understand what she was reading. It opened up a new world to her, one in which she could travel through her imagination into wonderful, fantastic worlds. Worlds in which the people were friendlier, more kind, ones in which the animals could speak and where she was welcome and felt as if she belonged. kind regards Helen Vipond (Wire Writers Warrington)

Hi, my name is Kirsten and
I work for CHILDREN 1ST. I just want to say thank you to everyone involved in
this project, especially Fiona, Thomas and everyone who has submitted an
    article.

    It’s a fantastic idea and
we’re so grateful for Fiona’s generosity.  Just £25 can pay for an hour’s play therapy
    with a CHILDREN 1ST project
worker for a child who has suffered abuse or experienced trauma, such as
    witnessing domestic violence.  Every
article submitted here is going to help vulnerable children, young people and
    families across Scotland
and we greatly appreciate all your support.

    Keep up the good work!
