F3 – Cycle 39 – You’ve Got to Know When to Hold ‘em

I’m a poker player going way back.I love the game; so much can be hidden and revealed at the card table. So let’s do a story this week that involves Poker. It can be in any style and you can decide what to tell and what to keep close to the vest.

Prompt: Title Prompt – Write a story involving playing cards and using these words: Ante, Drag, Bluff, Busted, Blind
Genre: Open
Word Count: Up to 1300 words
Deadline: Thursday, July 14, 2011 4:30 pm EST

I don’t play (or understand) poker so I’ll sit this one out, of you don’t mind! Besides we’re off to Cornwall next week (with dubious wi-fi connections) – will try to catch the stories on return. Good luck, all of you, anyway!

Have fun in Cornwall… I take it you’re not going to work on your tan… the forecast looks a bit iffy!

…..most of it will be spent in a brewery so I won’t CARE what the weather’s like! ;-p

Now, that DOES sound like fun!  Need a driver?  Lol!!

Well… for a subject I know little about… my story for this week came out rather quickly.  Of course, now the true poker players can “rip it apart”… hahahaha!  I know…I know… an hour of research on GOOGLE doesn’t make me an expert on the game.  :)

Now… I just have to remember to post the link before the deadline this week.  Maybe tomorrow… I want to do a final read-through and then find a picture to go with the story.

You really don’t have to know a lot about poker to include it in your story. It seems that I scared people away with this prompt. :-( I’m glad you took a risk!

  • Glen

I know absolutely nothing about cards!!   I’m all set to give it a go though :-|

Count me among the Google-trained poker writers :-) . My contribution is here: http://www.aldysfiction.com/blog/2011/07/13/friday-flash-dogs-of-war-fridayflash/

For this story, I did a little GOOGLE research too, to see if I could pick up a bit of the game… I guess Friday, we will find out, huh?

      That’s the spirit!

I’m in. Coincidentally, this gives me a chance to take a new character of mine for a test drive! Now let’s watch me scramble to get this in before the deadline…

Wow!  That is a little odd… it doesn’t display as a link to the story…. hmmm…..

Can’t wait to read it!  :)

From researching some on GOOGLE, the game of poker does sound interesting… I may try sometime…

The only poker I have ever played before is strip poker… I never was very good… always seemed to end up the first one all nakey…  apparently, four of a kind and straights and flushes are all low hands?  At least, that’s what the sorority sisters would tell me.

Sisters wouldn’t lie to each other, would they?  ;=)

I really don’t know anything about cards at all – but here is my bid…    http://www.glenslife.com/2011/07/lady.html

I am not a poker player and so not very knowledgable on that, but here is a story from what came in my mind http://www.vinodnarayan.com/flash-fiction/a-game-of-poker/

Oh, it’s a great prompt, Flannery!  Adds a little challenge for those of us “poker-challenged”.  And, as you say… you don’t really need to know that much about the game to write a story.

I am glad I did too… had to make up for missing the deadline with my story last week… didn’t want to miss two weeks.  And, I did have fun doing the research.  Plus… bonus… I know just enough about seven card stud to get myself in trouble now!  LOL!!

Maybe I will just play for jellybeans!
