F3 – Cycle 28 – The 700 Club

Sorry, this prompt will have nothing to do with Pat Robertson — Honest.

I mentioned a couple weeks ago in passing that I am assistant editor for the almost month old Shotgun Honey, a flash fiction crime webzine. We look for stories that are hardboiled, noir, crime thrillers that are under 700 words and haven’t been published prior in the last 12 months on the web.

700 is your limit, but here is your prompt. I don’t like to recycle this soon, but it was a good prompt back in Cycle 17 – The Novel Game.

It’s pretty simple, grab the book closest to you right now. Open to pg. 70. Choose the 7th sentence. In the meme, you would then post that sentence to your status, but for our purposes I want you to use this pseudo-random sentence as your start sentence.

Be sure to include the title of the reference book in the comments as well as the link.

Prompt: RANDOM FIRST SENTENCE – Following the rules of the game listed above, find your first sentence.
Genre: Open, though Hardboiled, noir, crime action would be nice.
Word Count: Under 700 words
Deadline: Thursday, April 28, 2011 4:30 pm EST

Next week is the mythical 5th Friday and also the start of a new Last Friday prompt series. The last Friday of every month we will have a Guest Moderator. Feel free to suggest future guests. They will be writers within our community, some published others not. Each with a passion for writing.

First up is Chuck Wendig, who you may know from his popular blog TERRIBLEMINDS where he writes on all forms of topics, though devotes a lot of time to inspiring writers to be writers. Chuck by profession is a game and computer industry writer, screenwriter, as well as cross-genre author. His first book DOUBLE DEAD for Abaddon Books comes out in November.

Apparently, I have a masochistic streak in me… because I am going to DO this!! This will be only my second flash fiction submission. My first one flash challenge was 800 words and I had just over two weeks to do it… I did it (well, 812 words, but who’s counting, right?), but only after much blood, sweat, and tears… okay, maybe the blood is a slight exaggeration… but, I did get a paper cut!

I’m done, its crap, its way over the word limit, and I just found out I’m out of beer. Bummer.

Dick Francis’ book, Field of Thirteen, a story entitled Bright White Star, gave me “The director sighed.” From there, came Lights, Camera… Power’s been out almost all day here, so I’m in a VERY DARK MOOD!

Jake Arnott’s THE LONG FIRM provided the first line of the story… the rest came from my own “little gray cells”.

My first line is from Hugh MacLennan’s Two Solitudes:

I might just be hopeless at crime fiction. I gave it a short shot, not really enamored with my results but here it is and maybe its a theme or something. In the middle of writing it, remembered that I too was out of beer

Done! I used the meme, but this doesn’t fall under any of the suggested genres. I don’t know what it is. Very sort of “free write” with just a little editing – extremely maudlin.

Forgot to mention the source: “Teamwork is an Individual Skill” — I didn’t have a novel handy when I decided to brainstorm. :/
