F3 – Cycle 17 – Novel Game

Hey, me again. Stepping in for Chad who’s uber busy, so he’ll be taking my spot at the end of the month and going back to back. So there, Chad. Got your back.

Last week I got hit by a book meme and I thought it would be a great tool for a story prompt.

It’s pretty simple, grab the book closest to you right now. Open to pg. 56. Choose the 5th sentence. In the meme, you would then post that sentence to your status, but for our purposes I want you to use this pseudo-random sentence as your start sentence.

Simple, isn’t it? Be sure to post along with your story the source of your starter sentence. Who knows maybe this will cross over into a book club.

Prompt: RANDOM FIRST SENTENCE – Following the rules of the game listed above, find your first sentence.
Genre: Open
Word Count: Under 1500 words
Deadline: Wednesday, February 9, 2011 4:30 pm EST

….OK , this is novel! (and I just had to hand Matt Hilton’s brand newie, so you’ve made me sneak nine chapters in to get the starter sentence…!)

Somehow I got a story done, its up at my place.

Ok, well, a story before the story.

The closest book to me was – until my daughter pointed out “no mom, this other book was the closest to you”! she had pointed out an astrology book I use as an armrest for using my Wacom, and that would have given a really interesting start, but I forgot it was there – the book “Creating Short Fiction” by Damon Knight. Absolutely fascinating, and terribly intimidating. I get the feeling that most of what is written in the book can be applied to longer fiction as well, and it has made me feel SO insecure that now I really want to try writing a novel. I can do no worse than fail, right? The book really is interesting and informative to someone like me, and it will get used often.

The astrology prompt would have been fun to try though… :-D

Anyways, I think I failed with the use of the ending here, it should likely be re-written, but I present it in any case: “The Rule of 56″ (it went through 3 title changes…)
